Life as a progressive intellectual in the Bible Belt can be challenging. Having grown up “inside the Beltway,” I have learned to appreciate the value of having local models of people who are devoted to their religious community. After living in West Michigan for about six years, I came to understand that God loves fundies more than people like me! It’s obvious that having more independent thinkers would create a confusing, chaotic society. That’s why God has wisely allocated more branches in the human tree to fundies than free thinkers! But my philosophical deepening and true gratitude to my fundy neighbors not withstanding, they can still push my buttons.
